Why Passion and Compassion are Vital for Success in Senior Care

19 September 2022

The realm of senior care is marked by routine and constant companionship. It's about preserving the dignity of seniors, tuning into their minutest needs, and infusing their lives with warmth and love. Day after day, year after year, it's a journey filled with profound beauty and challenges at each step. And to ensure that every senior in our care receives the utmost assistance, there's a principle that is crucial yet often overlooked: the unending essence of passion and compassion.

As the CEO of Vertical Health Services, I have learned that passion and compassion form the twin pillars of our success. For me, the invaluable experience I've gained over these 25 years revolves around these two fundamental aspects.

Passion is what drives us to constantly do better and strive for excellence. It's the motivation we need to learn, improve, and innovate in an industry that is rapidly evolving. But passion alone is not enough. Without compassion, the patient care we dedicatedly provide will lack the tenderness and kindness that seniors need during this phase of their life.

Drawing on my personal experiences from my journey from Weber State University to finally becoming a CEO, I have seen a lot of changes in the long-term care industry. But one thing hasn't changed. Ethically, we still hold ourselves responsible for the lives that depend on us. And it's compassion that enables us to meet those ethical demands – offering not just physical care but also emotional support.

But, combining passion with compassion also brings up a challenge. How do we meet operational efficiency while ensuring we are compassionate? The answer lies in our ability to balance the two. As leaders, we have the accountability to function at our prime while keeping in mind the feelings, the realities, and the lives of our patients.

In our journey through the healthcare sphere together, we will explore these themes of passion and compassion more deeply, all in hopes that this dialogue contributes to our collective understanding and growth in the healthcare sector. Remember, it's not merely about ticking off the professional check-boxes but about bringing about the change we want to see in the industry.
